Committing to read the Bible is a daily rhythm that anchors and strengthens us. Scripture is where we learn who Jesus is, who we are in Him, and how to walk in His ways. Learning to read and understand the Bible takes time.
SOAP is a simple framework that offers a place to start. As you grow, you can use this structure to go deeper and continue building a strong foundation in God's Word.
Read the passage. Write down the verse(s) that stand out to you. Writing out scripture has several benefits including helping you notice every word, engages your brain in different ways, and moves it from passive intake to active engagement.
Write out your observations of the passage. Observing moves you into paying attention to what the Scripture actually says first. Look for repeated words, commands, or key phrases.
Write out how you can apply this Scripture. Ask these questions: What is mine to do or to trust? Is there a shift I need to make in my thinking? Is there something to stop, start, confess, or continue?
Write out a short prayer asking Jesus to help you apply this in your life, guidance on what to do with the Scripture, or in response to anything you took from the Scripture. You can also use the Scripture as part of the prayer. Praying Scripture is a powerful way to pray.
Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude. — Colossians 2:6-7
